Governor's Welcome

Welcome to the official website of the Maryland Student Legislature (MSL). The 2007-2008 academic year is the Maryland Student Legislature’s 19th year as the only collegiate government simulation in Maryland. Students from colleges all across the state of Maryland are proud to call themselves members of the Maryland Student Legislature.

The Maryland Student Legislature offers students a forum in which they can learn about and discuss the important political issues that face Maryland today. The simulation is an accurate representation of the process of government in the State of Maryland. Students research the issues that are important to them and then use that information to write legislation. The legislation is then subjected to the committee process and if it passes, it is then submitted to the General Assembly where it is debated and voted on. Debate on legislation follows proper parliamentary procedure. If a majority of both bodies agree that the bill should be passed, it is then submitted to the Governor who can sign or veto the legislation. The legislation passed by the students during an academic year is compiled into a compendium which is then given to the Maryland General Assembly and other government officials.

The Maryland Student Legislature is comprised of the best and brightest students in our great state. Students that participate in the Maryland Student Legislature simulation take part in an organization that is at the forefront of promoting civic participation among young adults. Additionally, students have the opportunity to improve their debating and oratorical skills by standing up to defend or oppose legislation before the body. Most importantly, participants are given a wide variety of leadership opportunities. Students can serve as a Delegation Chairperson leading an institutions’ student participants, or they can serve the organization as an elected Council of State member or appointed cabinet member.

Take time to explore our newly updated webpage. You will find information about our upcoming events, past legislation that has been submitted by students, and information about participating colleges and universities. My primary goal as governor is to expand our organization by bringing in additional colleges and universities. If you see that your institution is not represented and you are interested in forming or reviving a chapter, please contact me at governor@msl.org and we will help you begin the process.

Please remember that whether you’re a student, faculty member, alumni, or someone interested in our organization, there are plenty of ways to get involved. Feel free to get in touch with us at anytime. I am excited to serve as the Governor of the Maryland Student Legislature over the next year.

Respectfully yours,

Jared Luner
