10 			A RESOLUTION CONCERNING REDISTRICTING

20 			 IN MARYLAND AFTER THE 2000 CENSUS



30	WHEREAS:		The State Legislature of Maryland will be faced with the task of redrawing

40 			congressional and state voting districts after the 2000 Census is reported; and,



50	WHEREAS:		There are a number of racially gerrymanded voting districts in the state of

60 			Maryland; and,



70	WHEREAS:		These districts have resulted in strong and competent minority representation on

80 			the state and federal levels in Maryland.



90	THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:	That the Maryland Student Legislature encourages the State

100 			Legislature of Maryland to continue the practice of racial gerrymandering; and,



110	BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:	That there should be no loss in the number of majority-

120 			minority districts in the state of Maryland after the districts are redrawn.
