10				A RESOLUTION CONCERNING

20	    INVOLVEMENT IN THE UNITED NATIONS BY THE UNITED STATES 



20	WHEREAS:	The United States was a founding member of the United Nations and has

30			retained membership in the organization since 1945; and, 



40	WHEREAS:	The United States currently provides twenty-five percent of the operating

50			budget for the United Nations; and,



60	WHEREAS:	Other member states of the United Nations are demanding that United 

70  			States increase their contribution to body from the current level of 

80			one-half of one percent of the gross national product; and,



90	WHEREAS:	Other nations that demand higher spending by the United States refuse 

100		 	to increase their contributions; and,



110	WHEREAS:	Member states of the United Nations constantly look to the United States 

120		 	to lead military interventions in hostile countries and thoroughly expect 

130		 	the United States to continually supply troops to serve as the world's 

140			police force; and, 



150	WHEREAS:	The United Nations continually attempts to violate the sovereignty of its

160			member nations by imposing policies and ordinances that are intended to 

170			supersede national law; and, 



180	WHEREAS:	The United Nations is fully prepared to enforce these policies and 

190			ordinances through trade sanctions and trade embargoes; and, 



200	WHEREAS:	Such gross violations of our sovereignty and national will are inconsistent 

210			with the ideals of freedom and liberty on which this nation has conducted 

220		 	its business since it's formation; and, 



230	WHEREAS: 	The foreign and strategic interests of the United States in the realms of

240			National Security Policy can be best served through the use of bilateral 

250		 	and multilateral agreements and treaties such as the North Atlantic Treaty 

260		 	Organization and the Strategic Arms Limitation Treaties.



270	THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:	That the Maryland Student Legislature urges that 

280		 	the United States immediately withdraw from and repudiate its 

290		 	membership in the United Nations.
