10 A RESOLUTION CONCERNING CONGRESSIONAL FINANCIAL DONATIONS OF 20 SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS 30 WHEREAS: The current restrictions placed on lobbying groups are minimal and ineffective 40 at preventing corruption; and, 50 WHEREAS: The current laws prevent any member of Congress from accepting more than 60 one-hundred dollars in contributions per year from special interest groups; and, 70 WHEREAS: No official record of these contributions is required by law to be kept by the 80 members of Congress; and, 90 WHEREAS: This leaves room for corruption in official reporting of congressional 100 contributions; and, 110 WHEREAS: Larger interest groups have the financial ability to gain more influence than 120 smaller groups in Congress. 130 THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED: That the Maryland Student Legislature urges the U.S. 140 Congress to draft and adopt stronger legislation that limits the monetary 150 amount that a special interest group can donate to an individual 160 member of Congress; and, 170 THEREFORE BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED: That under this new legislation members of 180 Congress shall be required to keep official records of their accepted financial 190 contributions from special interest groups. 200 MANDATES: President Bill Clinton 210 Vice President Al Gore 220 House Speaker Dennis Hastert 230 Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott 240 Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle 250 House Majority Leader Dick Armey 260 House Minority Leader Richard A.
